BRAZIL, 2003
Broadband has barely reached the neighborhood and already costs a fortune. You open a LAN house with six beige PCs and charge R$ 3 an hour. Customers pay cash or ask for fiado, a handwritten tab kept in the caderninho behind the counter.
Customers are not numbers. You learn their names, their habits and who always asks for credit. Treat them well and some become regulars. Let the queue, ping or service slip and your reputation pays for it.
The internet is the final boss: 512 kbps for the whole room. One person opens Kazuumba and the ping in every Counter Ops match shoots up. At the owner's PC, Janelas XP lets you watch the network, curb the worst bandwidth hogs and decide who has to wait.
Counter Ops players want clean ping and tournaments. Orkontro, Fotologão and MSM draw people who just want to be online. Everyone shares the same PCs, connection and your attention.
The building fights you too. PCs, freezer, fans and microwave share one circuit. If the till allows it, you can add more machines and a second room. If the power drops at the wrong moment, it is your problem.
The game teaches the basics and hands you the keys. You learn the rest behind the counter.
