About
The Imprint is a publishing management sim. You run a small literary press — acquiring manuscripts, shaping books, managing money, building a catalog. The decisions are never clean: whose advance to raise, whose marketing budget to cut, which midlist author to keep when the accountants are circling. Art and commerce pull in different directions, and neither wins every season. The balance sheet does not forgive a slow season — and neither does the author whose advance you cut to fund the one that failed.
Across five eras — from the typesetting age to BookTok — reader tastes shift, rival houses raid your roster, and backlist titles compound for decades. When something goes wrong, a causal graph shows you exactly what happened: every arrow of influence, on screen, on demand. Think of it as the log file for a launch that went wrong — except the log covers every reader, every review, and every marketing call you made. Most management sims hide the bad result behind a probability. Here, every outcome has a parent — usually a decision you made three seasons ago. No guessing. No slot-machine excuses. The genre’s opacity ends here.
Features
- Sign the right authors — Read manuscripts from agents, slush, and the long-suffering writers' workshop circuit. Sign the writer before the other house does, or pass and live with it.
- Hold the line on art — Prestige and revenue pull apart every season. Which midlist author do you protect when the numbers say cut?
- See the whole picture — The causal graph puts every influence behind a book’s reception on screen. Ends the genre’s slot-machine reputation for good.
- Compound the backlist — Books earn readers and rights deals long after release. Your catalog funds the next risk.
- Outlast your founders — Authors age, retire, and die. Their reputations outlive them. Margaret Voss may become an institution. She may be forgotten before you retire. The imprint you build outlives both.
- Play on your terms — Set rival aggression, economic pressure, and starting conditions. Every run is reproducible from the same seed.
