About

Roguefort is a turn-based open-world roguelike set on the continent of Cantal, at war over cheese the way Dune is at war over spice. Cheese drives the economy, shapes the cosmology, and fuels magic.

Magic in this world is cultivated rather than memorised from a spellbook. You play as an affineur, able to craft and age weird and powerful spells through ancient arcane cheesemaking practices. The game is immense in scope and depth. Build a homestead, delve dungeons for riches untold, farm, fish, forage, sail the open seas, craft items, and befriend wild creatures. Explore and discover a truly massive handcrafted continent, contested by five guilds, and on the verge of global war.

Craft and wield magical cheese

Raise livestock, gather rare ingredients, experiment with recipes, and age cheeses to create synergistic magical effects. Blind your enemies with a smoked gouda fog, then heal yourself with a sunberry tomme. Or just wail on them with a two-handed sword. Traverse the continent of Cantal to discover how the land shapes your magic and your magic shapes the land - this is terroir.

Four graphical perspectives

Powered by the custom-made Opthalis Engine, experience Roguefort through four distinct visual styles: classic ASCII, pixel art, 2.5D isometric, and immersive 3D first-person. Switch between them anytime to see your adventure in a new light and play however you prefer.

Explore a living continent

Explore Cantal in Adventure Mode, where the overarching landscape never changes, but the dungeons, encounters, weather and ecology regenerate every run to make it fresh and full of surprises. Or you can venture into The Crossing mode, which provides an entirely new procedurally generated continent each run, with its own history.

As you explore, meet the inhabitants of the world who live, work, grow old, and remember your deeds (and misdeeds). Every NPC has a distinct personality and back story, and your choices shape branching quests and different possible endings to the game.

Permadeath or Wayfarer

Choose Permadeath for a traditional roguelike challenge, or pick Wayfarer mode, where death has consequences, but you can continue onwards with your character.

Co-op and community features

Team up in co-op with up to four players: explore, build, and quest together. In single player, you can also visit the Old Mouth, which is a vibrant trading hub where you can see other players, interact and chat with them, and send in-game mail.

History of the game

Roguefort is made by solo developer Timothy Graham. The game went into development in 2025 and takes ideas and systems from various games that Tim has developed since 2019. This is the culmination of a long incubation period and Roguefort is a long-term living project that continues to grow and evolve with the support of a dedicated community.

The game is inspired primarily by Caves of Qud, Dwarf Fortress and Rift Wizard. The aim is to push the boundaries of what is possible in the traditional roguelike genre. Every step of the design process has been towards developing a game of truly massive scope but one that also has incredible depth and complex systems, while also being accessible to newcomers and players using varied input devices and types of machines.
