About

Pine Beat is a detective RPG featuring card-based duels, resource management, and moral choices. There are no black-and-white decisions here. Every choice is a compromise. And every choice comes with a price.

Winter never seems to end in Angel Pine. Snow covers the ground from November to April, sometimes even longer. This small logging town on the edge of Fogwood State is a forgotten place, where the furniture factory is barely surviving, people have grown tired of waiting for things to change, and the cold cuts right through to the bone. Everyone knows everyone. And everyone has something to hide.

The Land Union has exposed the corruption of local Sheriff Joss — bribery, blackmail, and dirty deals. He was locked up in a cell at the station, awaiting an investigation from San Fierro. But that very night, Joss escaped. Nobody knows who helped him. Everyone is a suspect. Especially his young deputy.

The town is left without a police force. The only person remaining at the station is that same deputy, Gregory Brown. Young, inexperienced, just an ordinary guy who happened to be in the right place at the wrong time. He's appointed acting sheriff.

Ahead lie mass murders, the destruction of the Land Union, and a truth that someone desperately wants buried beneath the snow. Later, a new sheriff arrives from San Fierro. Together, they take on a case that quickly reaches far beyond the borders of Angel Pine.

Complaint Review

Every morning, a fresh stack of complaints lands on your desk. A farmer whose fence was broken. A lawyer annoyed by someone's parking. An anonymous witness who saw something at a motel. You can investigate, postpone, or close each case. But every decision has consequences.

Archive

Beneath your desk lie case files spanning the last forty years. Enter someone's details, and the system searches for every document mentioning that person. The case might not even be about them — their name could simply appear in passing. But sometimes, that's exactly where the key to solving a mystery is hidden. Every search costs energy. Once you've found a document, you can take it, examine it, or leave it behind. But the information you've uncovered stays with you forever.

Inspection of locations

You head to a location and examine anything that seems important. Take photographs, assess the evidence, and draw conclusions. Every photograph could become a crucial piece of evidence — or just another worthless detail you've wasted your time on. At the end, you put together a report and find out how well you've done. Although sometimes, you might be asked to overlook certain details and prepare a "special" report with a "special" outcome...

Card-Based Interrogations

When it's time to get the truth out of someone, a duel begins. You have cards representing the facts you've gathered throughout the game. Your opponent has defense cards. Play your facts and combine them by subject, source, and timeline. Your opponent fights back with denials, alibis, and legal tricks. Your goal is to break their resistance without pushing too far. Because if you push too hard, they might simply stop talking. Forever.
